Return to Al E. Polin Park

In August, Amy and her daughters returned to Al E. Polin Park in Indianapolis’ Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood. You may remember that back in June, Amy and her Indianapolis Bar Leader Series Class XVIII first participated in the park improvement as their team service project marking the end of their year-long leadership program. At the time, the class pledged to continue coming back to the park and assist the City of Indianapolis, IndyParks, and the Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood Association with providing consistent and continuous improvements to the park grounds.

This time, Amy’s daughters decorated the sidewalk of the park with more than a dozen painted maple leaves – the unmistakable symbol of Mapleton-Fall Creek. The girls loved the color palette: the green and the blue look just like lush grass and summer sky!

Even though the team proudly rid the playground of weeds in the spring, over the course of the summer poison ivy took ahold of the ground in multiple areas throughout the park, including around the play structures. Removing all of the poison ivy took some extra time and extra caution, but it was well worth the effort. With the ground clear, it was all hands on deck spreading 27,000 lb of mulch, completely resurfacing the playground.

Amy shared that it is projects like this what makes her feel especially grateful to live in Indianapolis. There is much to do in our city – but there is also so much willingness and commitment to lend a helping hand. And that is a perfect recipe for a community in which positive impact is the means and thriving neighborhoods the goal. We can’t wait to bring you another update from the Al E. Polin Park. Until then – stop by if you are in the neighborhood.

Summer Safety Tips

Ah. July. The month of seemingly endless nights, vacations, concerts, camping trips, cookouts, and lazy days at the pool. It is the month when even the most secluded dwellers peek out of their shells and try new things.

Sadly, it is also the time when many preventable accidents happen.

Allow us to share with you our top five summer safety tips to stay safe this July and throughout summer.

Drink responsibly. We might sound like a broken record here but it doesn’t hurt repeating: Never drink and drive. Likewise, never ride with someone who has been drinking, no matter how well you know them or how much you trust them.

Be a defensive driver. Watch out for increased road construction and work zones. We all know the beating Indiana roads take every winter and spring. Summer is the time when those potholes get repaired and new construction gets underway. Anticipate slowed traffic, unusual traffic patterns, workers on the road, and watch out for distracted drivers.

There is no pool safety without supervision. Never leave children unattended when they are playing in the water. Lack of supervision is the leading cause of pool injuries and deaths among children; and lone swimmers are much more likely to drown than those who swim with a buddy. And while homeowners with a pool are required to have a fence or automatic pool cover per a state code in Indiana, do not assume that those will prevent a child from entering the pool or save them from drowning.

At some point, everyone is a pedestrian. To increase your safety, be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight when walking at night. If there is no sidewalk – which is the case with a majority of Indiana roads – remember to walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible. As a driver, help pedestrians stay safe by being alert and anticipating pedestrians everywhere, at all times.

Enjoy professional firework shows and skip the home fireworks altogether. The injuries home fireworks cause are simply not worth the fleeting fun they provide.

Everyone at the Law Office of Amy M. Davis wishes you a wonderful, safe summer filled with experiences and memories you will cherish forever. And while we keep our fingers crossed you will never need us, should you or anyone you know get seriously injured this summer due to the negligence of someone else, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We would be happy to help you navigate the process of a personal injury claim while you focus on getting better.

Service Project at Al E. Polin Park

The Law Office of Amy M Davis is proud to serve Indianapolis, the community in which we live and work, through our legal practice. But as an active service provider, we also like to support our community in meaningful ways beyond its legal needs and strive to make a positive impact wherever possible. Through our charitable work and financial support, we are committed to helping the city of Indianapolis and all those who call it home to thrive.

Amy and her daughters spent a wonderful day participating in a community service project at Al E. Polin Park. This project was organized by Amy’s Indianapolis Bar Leader Series Class XVIII as their team service project marking the end of their year-long leadership program. The City of Indianapolis, IndyParks, and the Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood Association also supported and participated in the project.

Together, they helped to beautify the park by cleaning up shrubbery, repainting shelter tables, and getting rid of weeds. Amy’s personal highlight of this project was painting the Unity mural designed by local Indianapolis artist Kierra Ready. Amy, a passionate and lifelong basketball player, was thrilled to work on and complete the basketball player section of the mural. Her daughters put their mark on the mural, too!

Al E Colin Park is located on 29th Street between Pennsylvania and Talbott Streets, if you’d like to see the Unity mural in person or if you’d like to shoot some hoops.

IndyBar Bar Leader Series

Our very own Amy Davis has been selected for this year’s Bar Leader Series organized by the Indianapolis Bar Association.

Congratulations, Amy!

The Bar Leader Series is an intensive year-long leadership development program designed specifically for Indianapolis Bar Association member attorneys. Under the tutelage of Robert H. McKinney School of Law faculty member and former Indiana Supreme Court Justice Frank Sullivan, the 18 participants will have a unique opportunity to interact with prominent legal and community leaders, develop leadership skills, explore long-term opportunities for leadership and form a lifelong network. The ultimate goal of the series is to prepare talented and diverse early-career lawyers to take their places as both leaders in the legal profession and leaders in addressing needs of the community.

We know Amy will take this wonderful opportunity and immerse herself in all it has to offer, emerging even more driven and motivated to pursue justice for those who need it most.

You can learn more about the Class XVIII Bar Leader Series and see the list of all participants at this IndyBar page. For a list of IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law alumni participating in the IndyBar series, please visit the IU McKinney page dedicated to the 2021 Bar Leader Series.
